Backflow Prevention assemblies are used to protect potable water supplies from contamination or pollution. In water supply systems, water is normally maintained at a significant pressure to enable water to flow from the tap, shower etc. When pressure fails or is reduced, as may happen if a water main bursts, pipes freeze or there is an unexpectedly high demand on the water system, then such reduced pressure in the pipe may allow contaminated water from the ground, from storage or from other sources to be drawn up into the system.

Requirement by the City
The City of Calgary requires each backflow preventer to be tested annually by a certified cross-connection control specialist. Caon Services Inc. is approved by the City of Calgary as a Certified Cross Connection service company, offering specialists to test, repair or install your backflow preventer.
Annual testing helps to hold buildings or businesses accountable for consistent maintenance as there may be small repairs needed that are not visibly apparent. This reduces the amount of contaminated water that could be getting into the clean water system. Your business will receive a City of Calgary cross-connection testing letter which requires the test results sent within 30 days.
You’ll receive a letter for testing if you manage any of the following types of buildings or businesses:
- Dentist Offices
- Condominiums
- Restaurants
- Hi-rise Office Buildings
If your building has any of the following systems, you’ll probably need to complete annual testing of your backflow prevention devices:
- Irrigation Systems
- Boiler Systems
- Fire Protection Systems
- Water Conditioning Systems
